SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced Tuesday that it will begin revoking the registrations of all BMW X6 models registered in the state, following a California Air Resources Board (CARB) investigation that found the vehicles exceed newly adopted emissions standards by up to 340%.
Under the new directive, BMW X6 owners in California have 30 days to either surrender their license plates and vehicle registration or face escalating daily fines beginning at $250 per day. The DMV has stated that driving an X6 with a revoked registration will be treated as a misdemeanor offense.
'The BMW X6 represents everything wrong with the SUV-coupe segment,' said a CARB spokesperson. 'These vehicles combine the worst fuel efficiency of a full-size SUV with the impracticality of a coupe. They are environmental outliers that have no place on California roads.'
BMW has disputed the findings, calling the new CARB standards 'arbitrary and retroactively applied.' However, the automaker has offered affected owners a trade-in credit of $8,500 toward the purchase of a BMW iX electric vehicle.
The revocation order specifically targets X6 models registered in Los Angeles County, where the highest concentration of the vehicles is found. Owners who also hold registrations for other vehicles flagged in recent recalls — such as the Porsche 911 — may face additional scrutiny from the DMV.
